The Origin Of Racial Tension In America (Part 4)

How and why did Democrats change from being racists?

To fully understand when, how and why Southern Democrats changed from being racists to being "champions" of Civil Rights, we have to examine the historical facts. Consider the following quotes from former president Johnson as he tried to convince his racist colleagues in Congress.

1964 – After the Kennedy assassination, new Democratic president Lyndon Baines Johnson, encouraged the Democratic leaders in Congress to pass “the n****r bill and we will have those n****rs voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” (Said to two governors (whose names were not given) regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to then-Air Force One steward Robert MacMillan. As quoted in Inside the White House (1996), by Ronald Kessler, New York: Simon and Schuster, p. 33.)

That is, after many years of filibustering against civil rights, it seems that LBJ was now willing to pass the Civil Rights bill not because it was the right and moral thing to do, but because it would gain votes for the Democrats! Many find his open racism unbelievable, but consider these other quotes by LBJ.

  • “These negroes are getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. If we don't move at all, then their allies (Republicans) will line up against us and there'll be no way of stopping them, we'll lose the filibuster and there'll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It'll be Reconstruction all over again.”(Said to Senator Richard Russell, Jr. (D-GA) regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1957. As quoted in Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream (1977), by Doris Kearns Goodwin, New York: New American Library, p. 155; emphasis mine.)
  • “I'm going to have to bring up the n****r bill again.” (Said to a Southern U.S. Senator upon the occasion of the Republicans re-introducing the Civil Right Act of 1957, according to LBJ's Special Counsel Harry McPherson. As quoted in McPherson, Harry. Interview with Michael L. Gillette. "Transcript, Harry McPherson Oral History Interview VI, 5/16/85, by Michael L. Gillette, LBJ Library.")
  • “Let's face it. Our ass is in a crack. We're gonna have to let this n****r bill pass.” Said to Senator John Stennis (D-MS) during debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1957. As quoted in Caro, Robert A. (2002). The Years of Lyndon Johnson: Master of the Senate, Volume 3. New York: Knopf. p. 954. ISBN 0394528360.
  • “Sam, why don't you all let this n****r bill pass?” Said to Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn (D-TX) regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1957. As quoted in Dallek, Robert (1991). Lone Star Rising: Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1908-1960. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press. p. 519. ISBN 0195054350.

The Democrats want to take credit for passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but they only voted for it after filibustering the bill for 57 straight days under the leadership of former of former KKK Exalted Cyclops, Robert Byrd. The Republicans voted for it on moral grounds, they didn’t have anything to gain. But the Democrats only voted for the Civil Rights Act after President Johnson promised that “Democrats would have the n****r vote for the next 200 years.”

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed during a Democratic Congress with a Democratic president, but it was the Republicans who had been pushing for this Civil Rights bill since the early 1950's.  In fact, the Democrats had filibustered every civil rights proposal since the 1850's.  This proves the proverb, "If you repeat a lie enough, people will begin to believe it."

If the Democrats are no longer racists, what do they stand for?

I have found that since their beginning under Andrew Jackson, the Democratic Party has been willing to do what it takes to get into and maintain power. They are willing to change their principles if it means that they remain in power. Consider: they were willing to change their position on civil rights after more than one hundred and fifty years of keeping blacks as slaves, denying blacks the right to vote, denying blacks the freedom to ride in the front of the bus, or even drink from a water fountain of their choice.

Democrats didn’t move away from racism because it is wrong, instead, they have tried to distance themselves from racism to garner votes. The Democratic Party has yet to apologize to blacks, or America as a whole, or to anyone else for their history of racism. Instead of apologizing, they simply have targeted the Republican Party as racists.

Furthermore, when an individual, a company, or a political party has a dramatic change in their philosophy or policy such as the Democratic Party claims to have had, they have a meaningful public “come to Jesus” moment and apologize to any and all who will listen. The Democrats never had that public mea culpa…EVER! They simply changed tactics the next day because they were going to lose elections if they didn’t. Consider: After nearly one hundred and fifty years of being the racist party, the Democrats did a complete one-eighty turnaround overnight and now claim that they are "champions" of the disenfranchised just to stay in power. If they are willing to change from their "core value" of racism that they held dear for hundreds of years, it just proves they are willing to do anything to keep that power.

A change of that magnitude would be tantamount to the Republican Party becoming pro-abortion and pro big government because they thought it would be politically expedient. Yet the Democrats made that kind of dramatic change in their political makeup and didn't say anything publically except they started calling the Republicans racists.

I have had people tell me that may have been the history of the Democratic Party, but it's not who they are today.  If that is true, when did they change?  When did they apologize to the blacks and America as a whole?  I have been able to read and reason since the 1950's and I don't remember this dramatic change taking place.  Doesn't America deserve to know the truth?

Why are the Democrats considered the "party of compassion" and patrons for the middle class? And when did the Republican Party become racists, bigots, homophobes, and rich white old men?

If you repeat a lie long enough, people will begin to believe it.

I encourage you to read and watch the links I used.  Don't believe me, do your own research on racism in America.  If you dig deep enough, you can find the truth on the Internet.  I encourage you to "google search" Jacksonian Democrats.  I encourage you to research the history of the Republican Party, Civil Rights, The Civil War, White Primaries, Jim Crow laws, etc.

A wise man once said, "If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it."

I wrote this blog without knowing Dinesh D'Souza would be publishing a book called Death Of A Nation.  He covers the same topic as this blog, only he is a much better writer and goes into much more detail.  I did not use his work, but we have come to the same conclusions.  I strongly encourage you to read his book, Death Of A Nation.
