Before Your Child's First Date
Have you talked with your children about dating? It's never too early to start. Don't be scared, make certain what you tell them is "age appropriate," pray, and go for it. I started talking to my daughters when they were about seven or eight years old. We discussed what qualities a potential "boyfriend" should have. We discussed the age they could date (16), but I changed to prom after they were 15. Both daughters still hold the values we discussed when they were living at home. All I'm saying is, it shouldn't come as a surprise that your children will want to date some day. This article republished from YMToday.com gives excellent advice. Let me know what you think.
Strategies for Winning the Spiritual War Teaching Them HOW To Think.
The Bible teaches we are in a spiritual war (Eph. 6:12). We know this is true, but have you ever considered where this war is taking place? Scripture is very clear when it says to:
“Set our mind on things above…” (Col 3:1)
“…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5)
“…think on these things” (Phil. 4:8)
“…renew your mind” (Rom. 12:1-2)
“Love the Lord with…all your mind” (Matt. 22:37)
There is little doubt that a major component in the spiritual war is a battle for our mind, for the control of our thoughts, our beliefs, our feelings, our desires, and our actions.
I’m convinced entertainment is a major influence in this war. Colossians 2:8 warns us not to let others spoil our faith and joy (beliefs) with their empty philosophies, wrong and shallow answers based on men’s thoughts and ideas instead of what Christ said.

I’m convinced entertainment is a major influence in this war. Colossians 2:8 warns us not to let others spoil our faith and joy (beliefs) with their empty philosophies, wrong and shallow answers based on men’s thoughts and ideas instead of what Christ said.
Isn’t this a description of the vast majority of today’s entertainment? When you put someone’s thoughts on celluloid, we call it a motion picture; on video it’s called a television program; add a tune to them and you have rock music, add a rhyme and it's rap, digitize it and it's a video game. It's easy to see the vast majority of the ammunition in this war is supplied by the entertainment industry!
The sad truth is that many of us are being entertained to death!
Instead of Satan announcing that he is our enemy and warning us that he wants to undermine our spiritual life, he has convinced us he is our friend and he simply wants to entertain us. And we deserve to be entertained.
What is the effect?
Follow this simple progression:
1. Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that "... the joy of the Lord is our strength.”
2. For Satan to make us weak, he has to destroy our joy.
3. Col. 2:8 says that if we continue to entertain ourselves with the empty philosophies of this world, it will undermine our joy.
4. Where do you find the empty philosophies of this world? Turn on most music, TV programs, DVDs, video games or most other forms of entertainment.
I believe that this is a major reason why so many Christians are struggling with their spiritual life. We have allowed our minds to be “conformed to the values of this world” (Rom. 12:1) without even realizing it. Things that once were considered offensive, now entertain us.
If this is true, shouldn’t churches take a stronger role in educating believers on how to fight in this spiritual battle for our minds? Most churches and parents want to avoid the entertainment issue entirely. But we can’t. It is all around us! It shapes our world, but it doesn’t have to shape usI
What can we do?
1. Pray for God’s wisdom and discernment. Nothing of significance can be accomplished without prayer.
2. Realize that much of today’s entertainment industry supplies the ammunition in the spiritual war of life. If you realize who the enemy is, you will be better able to defend yourself.
3. Become aware of the philosophies of today’s entertainment. Don’t make blanket statements. It’s not all bad nor is it all good. Evaluate all of it in light of God’s Word.
4. Set the example in your home by not entertaining yourself with philosophies that are against biblical values. How can we teach our children to make godly choices when we aren’t doing it ourselves?
5. Teach your family to make wise entertainment choices. The goal is to teach your family how to think biblically, not simply what to think. The Articles section on our website AlMenconi.com has many articles to help you do this successfully.

The purpose of Al Menconi Ministries is to help parents and leaders understand, connect with, and communicate values to their children.
About Us
We live in the United States of America, but our children live in the United States of Entertainment
New research by Kaiser shows the typical youth 11 thru 18 spends more than 7 hours 30 minutes a day with some form of entertainment media such as TV, video games, etc.
When you add nearly two hours a day texting that amounts to nearly 10 hours a day absorbing the values and culture of today's entertainment industry.
The vast majority of young people raised by Christian parents will not live for Jesus as adults.
Is there a relationship between our children's entertainment choices and their relationship with Christ?
It is important that our children learn how to think biblically, not merely what to think.
Al Menconi Ministries would like to help you accomplish this crucial task.
What is Al Menconi Ministries?
Al Menconi Ministries is an evangelical, non-denominational, 501 c-3 not-for-profit ministry designed to help parents and youth workers understand and communicate biblical values to young people.
Our mission is to educate and equip Christian parents, leaders, and youth to consider the values communicated in their entertainment and encourage choices consistent with God's Word.
We accomplish this by providing practical, balanced resources on today's entertainment for the church, school, and home. We like to emphasize the words "practical" and "balanced" because we challenge our audience to think, not merely tell them what to think.
One of our resources for churches and schools is Al's seminar for parents

The Bible teaches we are in a spiritual war (Eph. 6:12). We know this is true, but have you ever considered where this war is taking place? Understanding the following principles can be life saving for your family. We will use direct quotes from Scripture to help you clearly understand where this war is taking place, how it is affecting your family, and how you can be victorious.
A number of years ago, I went to a funeral that affected me profoundly. This story actually goes back to the last century. (I love saying that!) I was asked to lead a Bible study on Proverbs for one of the home Bible study groups at my church. I was excited. It was an opportunity to teach from my favorite book in the Bible again. I had taught Proverbs in Bible class when I was a teacher in the early 1970s. I thought that I would be teaching these people lessons from Scripture, but God had another plan.
My Story is in the Bible. I'm not kidding. Did you know a section of the Bible has the story of life story in it?
I know you think I’m kidding, but I’m not. It’s right there in Luke 15, starting with verse 11. Luke didn’t use my real name to protect the guilty. He used an alias—Prodigal Son—but it’s my original story. Honest. He only covered a few of the lowlights. This article has the rest of the story.
If Satan wanted to capture your attention how would he do it? Al writes an imaginary dialog between Satan and his demons with a tip of the hat to CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters. This is a cute, quick read but with deep insight. Think about it, what would Satan use to capture your attention and the attention of your family? How is that different than what is taking place in your home today?
It saddens me to see the majority of our young people accepting, without hesitation, the philosophy of hopelessness presented by so much of today’s entertainment media.
As I study the entertainment industry, one thing I see in nearly every facet is the feeling of hopelessness. "There are no answers for life’s problems. There is no future. There is no morality. There is no God. There is no purpose for life. There is no reason for living. Life is empty and hopeless."
How does this hopeless attitude toward life affect our children? What should we do about it? Don't believe the lie, this article should give you hope.
Many leaders believe it is the parents responsibility supervise their family’s entertainment. Others say there is so much garbage to supervise that it’s become a full-time job. For single parents who are struggling just to make ends meet and to raise a family, the job becomes overwhelming. What makes this issue difficult is that we're asked to accept the immorality that has become commonplace in today's society. How did this happen and what should parents know about today's entertainment?
The purpose of Al Menconi Ministries is to help parents and leaders understand, connect with, and communicate values to their children.
Seminars
Al Menconi addresses over 50,000 people (church leaders, school teachers, parents and their children) each year. He has developed a series of seminars that specifically address the issues of media, biblical values, and the Christian family.
Why We Do This Seminar In the spiritual warfare of life, the ammunition is the entertainment media! Seventy percent of children raised by Christian parents will not live for Jesus as adults. Here are two key reasons for this frightening statistic:
Parents have a tendency to simply tell their children what to think instead of how to think.
The entertainment media is teaching our children to live a life that is diametrically opposed to Christianity.
The purpose of Al Menconi coming to your community is to help parents and leaders deal with the entertainment media from a biblical perspective, set biblical guidelines for their home, and to teach their children to think biblically. This is not a youth rally for kids to make emotional decisions, but a time for parents to seriously reconsider how they are communicating moral values to their children. It is vital that parents of all ages attend. The following suggestions should help you coordinate this event.
Thanks! Al Menconi Ministries would like to thank you for coordinating the Al Menconi seminar and meetings. It takes a lot of time and energy to promote an event like this, and we're certain the people who attend will appreciate your efforts. We would like to thank you in advance for all your hard work. It is our hope and prayer that Al's time with your organization and community will be a life changing experience for all concerned. Your efforts are crucial to make this a special time. Do not attempt to do this alone--especially if you have other responsibilities at the church. Delegate each area to key people who have the same commitment as you to make these meetings a success. Here are a few ideas that have proved to be successful over the years.
Prayer Is the Key We have found that when an event is saturated in prayer, amazing things happen! Begin the process of prayer right now. Print a request for prayer for the Al Menconi Meetings to run continuously in your church bulletin, newsletter and all appropriate noteboards from the time you receive this until the week of the meetings. Al is a good communicator and very entertaining, but his words will simply echo off the walls that aren't coated with prayer.
Childcare Since the people we are trying to reach have children, do your best to provide childcare during the meetings. Mature junior high and senior high students can help watch the younger children. Al likes to tell the story of when his girls were toddlers and his wife said she would go anywhere they had free babysitting. You want to make it convenient for the people who need to be there the most: young parents.
Dinner at Church If it is appropriate, and you believe that it will encourage more parents to attend, you might want to provide a simple dinner. Chili, spaghetti, or sandwiches are easy to prepare for a crowd and it could be an incentive for busy parents to attend.
Newsletters Does your church have a newsletter? We will be glad to send one of Al's recent editorials for you to reprint. It will give your readers an opportunity to be challenged as well as see Al's heart.
Newspapers, Radio and TV Contact the local newspaper (Christian or mainstream) in your area. They usually have a community events calendar and the entry is often free for churches. Do this as soon as possible. Papers usually need the information weeks ahead of the event. If you have the budget, buy an ad using the poster on the enclosed disk). Do this continuously for two or three weeks before the event. Al is also open to do radio and print interviews over the phone. Most Christian radio stations and newspapers are eager to interview Al a week or two before the event. Don't limit your requests to Christian newspapers and radio. Mainstream papers are always looking for a "good interview" for a community event.
Local Churches and Organizations Post the enclosed poster at local Christian bookstores. Most Christian bookstores have a section for this purpose. Al's ministry focus is to teach Christian parents and leaders of all denominations. Let this be a time when all the churches and Christian organizations in your community come together, not just your denomination. Contact all the local churches and send each a poster and ask them to post it in their bulletin and Sunday school classes. Follow up the poster with a phone call the following week to see if they need more. This is a good time to answer questions. Call us if we can help in this area.
Again, thanks for your commitment to making a change in the families of your community! Please let us know how we can help.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN AN INTERNET AGE Parents and/or teachers seminar
We are in a spiritual war; and the majority of the ammunition aimed at our families comes from today’s entertainment industry. If this is true, setting guidelines for your family and teaching them how to think within those guidelines is not a side issue – it is the most important thing we can teach our children. We must teach our children HOW to think biblically, not merely WHAT to think.
This 1 ½ - 2 hour session provides parents and leaders valuable information on how to understand and combat the influence of today’s entertainment media on the family. Issues from online gambling, video games, personal sites such as MySpace and Facebook to spam, and pornography are covered from a biblical worldview.
MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY Worship services and keynote addresses
God tells us to make the most of every opportunity because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-20). But what does this mean? This passage teaches that to make the most of every opportunity, we need to know God's will for us. In this special message, Al explains how we can know God's will and how to apply this knowledge to our daily lives. Al does this by highlighting a part of this Scripture passage that is often ignored: the connection between God's will and singing in our hearts to the Lord. Singing to the Lord helps us give thanks in all things and, ultimately, this is the basis of making the most of every opportunity. Al teaches this simple truth in a way that is sure to uplift and encourage every Christian.
BUT IT DOESN'T AFFECT ME! For adults and youth
How should Christians respond to today's entertainment? If we ignore it, teens tend to assume all their entertainment is okay. If we try to control it, it often turns the home into a battlefield. This practical, informative, and humorous seminar answers excuses like, "It doesn't affect me!" "I don't listen to the words!" 'Everybody does it.' It also shows families how to make positive entertainment choices. Parents should attend to understand how the entertainment industry is undermining biblical values.
WHERE ARE THE LINES: 10 PRACTICAL STEPS TO TEACH VALUES TO YOUR CHILDREN A two-session seminar for parents and teachers
Secular entertainment teaches worldly values to our kids every day. How can Christian parents and teachers combat this negative influence? It's not enough to tell our children whatto think, we must take the time to teach them howto think biblically, as well. This seminar offers practical strategies to control entertainment in the home, and will help you teach your children to develop biblical values in their life decisions. A must-seminar for every Christian parent and leader
DEVELOPING STUDENTS' CHARACTER AND TEACHING THEM HOW TO THINK BIBLICALLY For teachers
Research has found that the majority of young people raised in church will not live for Jesus as an adult. A major reason is much of today's entertainment undermines the values you are teaching. This seminar presents a highly practical lesson plan for your classroom to help you see today's entertainment from a biblical perspective and help you teach your students how to think and to make entertainment choices consistent with God's Word. Teachers will come away with a very practical, hands-on lesson plan for their class.
LIVING FOR JESUS WITHOUT COMPROMISE Keynote address for youth conventions, Church worship service
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are Old Testament examples of young people who were able to stand tall when everyone else was bowing to the idol. Columbine High School's Cassie Bernall is a modern-day example of the same kind of faith. How can today's young person stand tall when everyone around them is bowing to the idols of this world? This high energy, motivational challenge will provide Christian youth with the spiritual insight necessary to stand up against the pressure to bow to influence of this world.
DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART Worship services and keynote addresses
Godly music is important to God. Why isn't it more important to Christians? King David understood God's purpose for music in our spiritual lives. Once we understand how godly music helps us to give thanks in all things, we will be able to live more victorious Christian lives. This combination worship service and motivational talk will be a challenge to Christians of all ages.
DEVELOPING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR KIDS For parents
When was the last time you told your child why you were a Christian, why you believe in Scripture, why you love God? As your children grow in age, it becomes increasingly difficult to communicate the truly important issues of life to them. In order to really communicate, we must have something in common. This practical seminar will show you how to develop meaningful conversations, so you can clearly communicate the biblical values you hold so dear. Parents will enjoy the use of Christian videos to express their faith in Christ.
The purpose of Al Menconi Ministries is to help parents and leaders understand, connect with, and communicate values to their children.

Devotional
The Full Tilt Media Challenge (FTMC) is a free life-changing program designed around a 30-day online devotional. The theme verse is Colossians 2:8--"Don't let others spoil your faith and joy with their philosophies, their wrong and shallow answers built on men's thoughts and ideas instead of on what Christ has said." (Living Bible)
The FTMC is designed to help you see entertainment in the same way I now see fattening food. One compromise leads to another, and another, and another. Eventually, it will affect us negatively. The Full Tilt Media Challenge offers positive solutions for your spiritual struggle.

STUDENTS UNDERTAKE TASK OF LISTENING EXCLUSIVELY TO CHRISTIAN MUSIC FOR 30 DAYS
Author: HARMONY WHEELER, TEENS IN THE NEWSROOM

Article Text:
Thirty freshmen at Big Valley Christian High School went on a diet last month.
This diet, however, did not involve losing weight, working out or giving up favorite foods.
Instead, the Christian Music Diet required participants to give up secular music and listen to only Christian music for 30 days.
For some, that was even harder than giving up McDonald's and Cold Stone Creamery.
"Doing this Christian Music Diet was not easy," said 14-year-old Nicole Chacon, "but I got through it with the help of God. I prayed to Him when I was struggling. After all, the point of this diet is to become closer to God.
"Now," she said, "I have good days when I used to have bad days. Listening to Christian music is always very uplifting, compared to secular music, which is often depressing."
Nicole said the diet helped her become closer to God.
"Whenever I was struggling, I knew I could look to him, and I did," she said. "To this day, even after the diet, I look to God for comfort, strength and guidance."
The diet was created by Al Menconi Ministries, an evangelical, nondenominational ministry whose goal is to educate and equip Christian parents, leaders and students to communicate biblical values in the home and church.
"I originally started encouraging my students to take a 'diet' in 1972," Menconi said in an interview by email. "It has been refined over the years and is constantly changing. In fact, we made major changes to it last year and now call it The FullTilt Challenge, or Living FullTilt."
Like the Christian Music Diet, the FullTilt Challenge requires participants to listen to only Christian music for 30 days. However, it also involves eliminating all forms of entertainment that go against biblical values.
Like losing weight, Menconi says on his Web site, you cannot accomplish something by giving up only small, select areas and, after a quick diet, going back to old habits; you have to change completely.
Ed Limon, a Bible teacher at Big Valley, adopted the diet about four years ago as an extra-credit opportunity for students.
Now, freshman Bible teachers Steven Neff and Ryan Poling have continued this challenge, while Limon has taken on the expanded version of the diet, FullTilt, and used it to challenge the juniors and seniors.
Involving more than just students, the diet required family participation. Parents had to sign an agreement saying they would not listen to secular music around their kids.
The teachers who assigned the challenge did it along with the students, as well.
"I would never ask anyone to do something I would not be willing to do myself," he said. "This is a biblical concept set forth by Jesus himself, as well as his disciples and the apostle Paul."
Neff, who teaches computers as well as Bible, would not allow the use of iPods or other MP3 and CD players during free time while the diet was going on.
Secular music plays a large role in teens' lives, so giving it up can be quite a challenge.
"It is very difficult to shut out secular music," said Meaghan Kingsley-Teem, 16. "It is everywhere: in stores, at school, even at church!"
Meaghan said curiosity motivated her to try the diet.
"I just wanted to see how much my music really affects me," she added. "I usually listen to music that fits my mood, whatever I feel like, but the Christian Music Diet is a way to take your mind off of this world and focus it on God. Through the diet, I have grown closer to my Lord and experienced joy that does not depend on circumstances."
Even though she sees the Christian Music Diet's effect as positive, Meaghan said she doesn't plan to continue avoiding secular music.
"I do not think I will follow this diet stringently," she said, "but I will definitely change my music selection to a mostly Christian makeup."
Neff said he wishes more students had accepted the challenge. Out of about 65 freshmen, only 30 did.
Dan Grigg, 16, said, "I was raised on the music I listen to, mainly rock, and I am not willing to give it up. I like it. I am not going to give it up just like that."
Besides, he added, "It takes a while for me to find out the other types of music I like."
Joe Colley, 14, also passed on the challenge.
"I did not want to do the Christian Music Diet because I did not need the extra credit and I enjoy the music I listen to," he said. "What I listen to depends on who I am around. I like all kinds of music and can listen to anything that people put in. My family listens to secular and Christian music, but we listen to a lot of radio."
He also said it would have been difficult to maintain the diet at home.
"I am not willing to make my family conform to something they are not willing to do," he said. "I am not going to torture myself by switching my music and giving it up for 30 days for some music I listen to only once in a while."
Robert Lasiler, 15, said he listens to a lot of industrial, punk, techno, grunge and metal music; anything, he said, that has meaning in its words.
"Music does not change a person," he said, "and not listening to music won't change a person, either. The music you like does not describe what kind of person you are. If I listen to lyrics that say, 'God is dead,' it won't change my faith. I am not changed by others' opinions."
Neff said he has heard many Christians say that they aren't affected by listening to secular music.
"My question to them is this: If these things do not have an effect on your life, then why is it so hard to give them up for a measly 30 days and find out for sure? Especially when we, as Christians, believe that Jesus gave up his throne in heaven for a time to suffer humility and an unspeakable death on the cross for us?"
Britteny Vargas, 15, said that since she tried the Christian Music Diet, "in my everyday life, I feel calmer and ready to face my trials. I might try the diet again in the future. It was a difficult challenge, but it helped me a lot. It has given me a more well-rounded feeling for music. I can understand more of what I hear now. It has made me conscious of what I listen to."
Britteny said she enjoys Christian music much more since she tried the Christian Music Diet.
"Sometimes I like to vent through music. With nonsecular music, it seems like you can't do this, but you really can," she said.
"When you have a bad day, you want to get all of your anger out. Listening to hard-core stuff, just loud and crazy music or music in general, seems to get rid of the hurt. Music, both secular and Christian, can give you the feeling that someone else has been through your hurts, too."
Britteny said she likes hard rock by Green Day, Muse and Three Days Grace. But similar sounds can be found with Christian bands like Switchfoot, Hawkinson, Kutless, 12 Stones and Relient K.
"Sometimes, secular music may seem better, but Christian music can sound just as good."
Neff said he has seen changes in the students who tried the Christian Music Diet. "They are more open to seeking godly music," he said, "They are no longer afraid of being looked on as different because of the music they listen to, because they have discovered there is good Christian music in almost any genre they could imagine. My prayer is that they will take this newfound knowledge and apply it to other things in their lives, such as the television and movies they choose."
The theme verse of the diet is Colossians 2:8, which says, "Don't let others spoil your faith and joy with their philosophies, their wrong and shallow answers built on men's thoughts and ideas instead of on what Christ has said."
Nicole Chacon could identify with that verse after trying the Christian Music Diet.
"I would encourage people to just try this diet," she continued, "It really does help not only your personal relationship with Christ, but your daily life, too. I do not think I will continue to listen to Christian music 24/7, but I will listen to it more often."

What is the Full Tilt Media Challenge?
The Full Tilt Media Challenge is simple. Listen exclusively to Christian music for thirty days while eliminating
all forms of entertainment that are against biblical values. It sounds simple and for many it will not be a big deal,
the Full Tilt Media Challenge will simply be reinforcing what you are presently doing. For others, however, the Full
Tilt Media Challenge will be a traumatic experience, as it will illustrate just how tight entertainment has a grip on
our lives. Giving up 'ungodly' entertainment--even for just thirty days ? will be like kicking drugs for many. You can
do it. Don't give up. That is why we set up this website to help you.
We have provided articles and Scriptures to help you see entertainment in a new light--from a biblical perspective
as well as developing a new understanding for the value of Christian music. At the end of each article you will find a
question or two to help you digest what you read as well as a suggested action you can take.
Couldn't we just cut down on the bad entertainment and entertain ourselves with 'good' entertainment?
We could, but the reason I suggest such a drastic lifestyle change is because most Christians are so immersed in
the values of this world through entertainment that we often don't know the difference between what is acceptable to
God and what isn't. We often make entertainment decisions without a thought how it might affect our spiritual life.
The Bible commands us to set our mind on things above. Music is a mind-setter; why not allow it to set your mind
on life from a godly perspective? As you do, it is our hope that you will begin to see life from a biblical
perspective. Remember, we are not saying that the answer to life is Christian music. It's not magic, nor is it some
ecstatic experience. It is simply common sense. It is a means to help you set your mind on 'things above instead of
on this earth.' When you do, you will be at peace. What have you got to lose? Thirty days? Come on and join us
on a potential life-changing journey.
May I suggest a new type of diet?
The Full Tilt Media Challenge will challenge you. For the next thirty days, eliminate all music, television,
videos, and motion pictures that are against biblical values and listen only to Christian music. It will be like
washing your brain with God's truth. When you do, I believe you will have a clearer understanding of what kind of
entertainment is healthy for your spiritual life.
Our part is to provided you with a daily article and Bible verse as a source of encouragement as you venture into
The Full Tilt Media Challenge challenge. You will find that many of the articles are directed to parents as they
lead their families. If you are a single adult or youth, hopefully you will be able to glean biblical principles to
help you in your daily walk with Christ as well. The daily Scripture, however, is designed to be an encouragement
to help all Christians make wise entertainment choices and to understand the value of listening to godly music.
It is our prayer that this Full Tilt Media Challenge will be more than a legalistic rule, but it may be a life
changing experience for you, your family and friends.
Will you accept the The Full Tilt Media Challenge?
